Mangione faces federal charges as well as state charges in New York and Pennsylvania, including murder with a firearm
and identity falsification after Thompson was shot outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Mangione has become something of a folk hero for a segment of the population that views his alleged actions as
a stand against the health insurance industry, with supporters publicly calling to “Free Luigi.”
